October open-weight releases: licenses and local-running limits

Research textEvidence and lineageDiscussion

Summary

As of October 2026, the reviewed public sources identify weights for DeepSeek V4.1 Flash 1017, Fish Audio Drama3, FLUX 3 Image Klein and MOSS-Image. They do not establish interchangeable licenses or equally practical local execution paths. The located Krea 3 announcement describes hosted/API access, not a verified open-weight release. [1][3][4][7][9][12]

Method and collection date

This report synthesizes public model cards, license texts, installation documentation, a software repository and a product announcement collected in October 2026, with a research cutoff of October 20. It separates publisher documentation from tested behavior. No weights were downloaded, no gated terms were accepted, and no inference or benchmarks were run. Retained URLs received scripted HTTP availability checks on November 2, 2026; those checks do not refresh the October findings or verify page contents.

Findings

Published weights are only the first distinction

The following comparison reflects the evidence available as of October 2026. “Unverified” means the reviewed sources did not establish the claim; it does not establish that a capability is absent.

ReleaseWeight availabilityLicense and local-execution boundary
DeepSeek V4.1 Flash 1017Official dated checkpoint identified. [1]Official card declares MIT; the original research could not directly retrieve the license text. A complete running-memory minimum remains unverified. [1][2]
Fish Audio Drama3Official original and INT4 checkpoints identified. [3][4]Fish Audio Community License conditions apply. The official installation route documents Linux/WSL with CUDA and at least 48 GB GPU memory, not CPU/MPS support. [5][6]
FLUX 3 Image KleinOfficial gated weights identified. [7]FLUX Kommunity terms apply to the weights; availability is not blanket permission for commercial deployment. [7][8]
MOSS-ImageOfficial SFT checkpoint identified. [9]Apache-2.0 terms; the documented quick start uses a custom Diffusers pipeline on CUDA. An Apple execution path remains unverified. [9][10]
Krea 3No official weight release verified in this review. [12]The located announcement describes hosted/API access; weight licensing and local-runtime requirements remain unverified. [12]

Parameter counts and stored weights do not establish usable memory

The DeepSeek source distinguishes backbone parameters from the entire checkpoint and its additional components. It therefore does not support treating a backbone count as the total material to load. Its complete local running-memory minimum remains unverified. [1]

Drama3 provides a more concrete documented hardware boundary: the official installation guidance calls for at least 48 GB GPU memory. That requirement belongs to its documented execution path, not automatically to every independent conversion or runtime. The INT4 checkpoint's existence alone does not establish a lower supported hardware minimum. [4][6]

MOSS-Image's quick start loads a custom pipeline with trust_remote_code=True and moves it to CUDA. That is evidence of a documented route, not a measured per-precision VRAM minimum or proof of Apple compatibility. [9]

License conditions need separate review

As of October 2026, Drama3's controlling source is the Fish Audio Community License v1.0 rather than a permissive label inferred from model metadata. The source describes conditional hobby/research use, a US$500,000 trailing-year revenue threshold that includes affiliates, and written-permission requirements for self-service third-party TTS/cloning subject to stated exceptions. Falling below the threshold alone does not authorize a TTS service. Voice consent and other license restrictions still matter. [5]

FLUX Kommunity v1.0 similarly distinguishes unpaid personal hobby use from a conditional commercial-output route. The reviewed terms describe a qualifying-user threshold below US$5 million annualized gross revenue, including affiliates, together with filtering, review and disclosure conditions. These are not Apache-2.0 weight terms. [8]

MOSS-Image's Apache-2.0 license does not impose a revenue ceiling, but redistribution obligations and separate dependency licenses remain relevant. DeepSeek's official checkpoint card declares MIT; its license identification in the original collection rested on that card because the direct license retrieval failed. The later HTTP 200 check does not substitute for reviewing the license text. [1][2][10]

Developer software and hosted products are different categories

DeepSeek Harness is public MIT-licensed developer software, separate from the model checkpoint. Its software requirements should not be read as the model's GPU or memory requirements. [11]

Krea 3 is the opposite classification problem: a hosted/API announcement is not evidence of downloadable weights. As of the October 2026 cutoff, the reviewed material did not verify an official Krea 3 weight repository, weight license or local inference path. This is a bounded finding about the reviewed evidence, not proof that no release could exist elsewhere or appear later. [12]

Limitations

This is a documentation comparison, not an installation guide, legal opinion or model-quality evaluation. Runtime compatibility, hardware requirements and licenses are historical findings as of October 2026 and may change. No exact all-file download totals or independently measured running-memory requirements are asserted. Community conversion sizes and performance anecdotes are omitted rather than presented as comparable benchmarks. HTTP availability checks establish neither current feature behavior nor the accuracy of the original claims.
